Breast Lift in Lowell, MA

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to change the shape of the breasts, also known as mastopexy. During a breast lift, the surgeon removes excess skin and reshapes breast tissue to raise the breasts.

Why do Breasts Change over Time?

Breasts change with age and often lose firmness and elasticity.

Some common conditions that may change the breasts include:

  • Pregnancy – the tissue that support the breasts might stretch as the breasts get fuller and heavier and cause sagging breasts after pregnancy whether or not you breastfeed your baby
  • Weight changes – changes in weight can cause the breast skin to stretch and become less elastic
  • Gravity – over time, gravity causes ligaments in the breasts to stretch and sag

Why is a Breast Lift Performed?

You might choose to have a breast lift:

  • if your breasts sag
  • your nipples point downward
  • to restore the shape and position of your breasts
  • one of your breasts falls lower than the other
  • to alter the size of the areolae to keep them in proportion to the newly shaped breasts
  • to boost your self-image and self-confidence

Breast Lift and Augmentation or Reduction

A breast lift won’t change the size of your breasts. Breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. However, a breast lift can be done with breast augmentation or breast reduction to alter the size of your breasts.

Goals of a Breast Lift

The goal of a breast lift is to position the breasts in a place that feels natural for you. You can discuss your goals with your surgeon to determine the right surgical methods.

Your surgeon might make incisions:

  • Around the areolae or the darker area surrounding the nipples
  • Extending downward from the areolae to the breast creases
  • Horizontally along the breast creases

The surgeon might place stitches to reshape the breast tissue or reduce the size of the areolae. Your surgeon will remove excess breast skin and shift the nipples to higher positions. Then the surgeon brings together the breast skin and closes the incisions with stitches, surgical tape, or skin adhesives.

The procedure typically takes two to three hours and you can go home on the same day. Dr. Ali will give you aftercare instructions which may include possible drains, bandages, bras, and avoiding certain activities for a couple of weeks.

What are the Risks?

It is important to talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon before a breast lift. There are many factors to consider, including your health history and the right time for the procedure.

Dr. Ali may review any potential scarring or changes in nipple or breast sensation. Dr. Ali is very careful to answer all of your questions and help avoid risks of uneven shapes or sizes. We want you to feel confident in your breast lift and ease any of your concerns.

Am I a Candidate?

A breast lift isn’t for everyone. The following reasons may suggest you delay or reconsider your breast lift:

  • Future pregnancy – if you plan to become pregnant in the future, you might delay getting a breast lift as they may stretch again during pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding – breastfeeding a baby after a lift is possible but it may be harder to produce enough milk
  • Larger breasts – those with smaller breasts will likely have longer lasting results than larger breasts which are heavier, making them more likely to sag again
