Breast Reduction Surgery in Lowell, MA
What Is a Breast Reduction?
A breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) removes fat, breast tissue and skin from the breasts. For those with large breasts, a breast reduction surgery can help to ease discomfort and improve appearance.
Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?
You may be wondering if you are a candidate for breast reduction surgery. The reasons for this surgery vary, but most often include wanting to relieve some discomfort that is associated with larger breasts.
Common Reasons for a Breast Reduction
- Embarrassment with their breast size
- Suffer from upper back pain
- Neck pain
- Experience skin rashes
- Problems finding clothes
- Difficulty with exercise or other activities
You can talk to Dr. Ali about your desire for breast reduction surgery. You may not qualify if you:
- Have complicated medical problems
- Smoke
- Are considered obese with a BMI over 30
- Have desires to lose weight or have children, as this may impact the breasts
- We will work with you to align your health to make sure you have the best possible outcome with your breast reduction surgery.
The Goal of Breast Reduction
The goal of a breast reduction is not only to reduce the size and volume of the breasts, but also to give a natural shape.
In addition to a breast reduction, our surgeons typically will:
- Raise the nipple areolar complex
- Reduce the appearance of sagging
- Tighten the breast skin
- Give a fuller, more youthful shape
We want to make sure you are satisfied with the outcome, so we will talk at length with you about your desires and expectations post-surgery.
Breast Reduction Procedure
Because of the high level of skill required to perform this surgery, only plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be considered. Dr. Ali is highly skilled in this procedure and takes great care to help you get the outcome you deserve.
During the procedure, you will be under general anesthesia with the surgery generally lasting about two to three hours, depending on the complexity and degree of breast sagging.
Your surgeon will try to make your breasts look alike, but breast size and shape might vary somewhat. The size of the areola also might be smaller. All of the sutures are dissolving and under the skin. The incision scars will fade over time, but they won’t completely go away.
The majority of patients go home the same day. You will wear a sports bra for 4 weeks postoperatively. We recommend no driving for 1 week. Most people take 1-2 weeks out of work.
You will need to rest and take proper precautions following surgery. Most can resume exercise by 4 weeks after surgery.
